How To Make Calamari Steak Recipe

Calamari steak, also known as squid steak, is a delicious and unique seafood dish that's easy to prepare. Here's a simple recipe to make calamari steak:

Ingredients:

  • 4 calamari steaks (about 1/2 to 1 pound)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika (optional, for added flavor)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs (panko or regular)
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • Lemon wedges and fresh parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions:

Prepare the Calamari Steaks:

If you've purchased whole calamari, clean and prepare them by removing the head, tentacles, and the thin membrane (cartilage) from the body. Slice the body into 1/2-inch thick rings. If you've bought pre-cut calamari steaks, you can skip this step.

Set Up a Breading Station:

In three separate shallow dishes, place the following:

  • Dish 1: All-purpose flour mixed with salt, pepper, and paprika (if using).
  • Dish 2: Whisked eggs with milk.
  • Dish 3: Breadcrumbs.

Bread the Calamari Steaks:

  • Coat each calamari steak with flour mixture, shaking off any excess.
  • Dip the floured steak into the egg mixture, allowing any excess to drip off.
  • Finally, coat the steak with breadcrumbs, pressing gently to adhere. Place the breaded steaks on a plate or tray.

Heat the Oil:

  • In a large, deep skillet or a deep fryer, heat about 1 inch of vegetable oil to 350-375°F (175-190°C). Use a thermometer to ensure the oil is at the right temperature.

Fry the Calamari Steaks:

  • Carefully place the breaded calamari steaks into the hot oil, a few at a time, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Fry them for about 2-3 minutes per side or until they turn golden brown and crispy.

Drain and Serve:

  • Using a slotted spoon or tongs, remove the fried calamari steaks from the oil and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.

Garnish and Serve:

  • Serve the calamari steaks hot with lemon wedges and a sprinkle of fresh parsley if desired. They are delicious on their own or with a dipping sauce like marinara or aioli.

Enjoy your homemade calamari steak! It's a delightful dish that pairs well with a simple salad or some freshly cooked pasta.
